New data center in Holyoke uses flywheels for energy storage
The $95 million Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center is designed to reduce energy consumption by 25%. It uses clean and cheaper hydroelectric power from a dam on the Connecticut River and a bank of flywheels to store excess energy until needed.
The center is a joint venture of MIT, Harvard University, UMASS, Boston University, Northeastern University and tech giants EMC Corp. and Cisco Systems.
